New Tyre Norms: Safer, Fuel Efficient Tyres In India

New Tyre Norms

Ministry of Road Transport and Highway has issued new draft rules. Under this, the tyres of cars, buses and trucks should meet a specific requirement of rolling resistance, wet grip and rolling sound emissions. This will ensure the reliability and fuel efficiency of the tyres. Let’s learn a bit more about the new tyre norms.

All the new models of tyres from October 2021 onwards will have to follow these rules. As for the old models, the deadline is October 2022.

All the standards that the tyres will have to adhere to are mentioned in Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) 142:2019.

In series of tweets, MoRTH said,  “MoRT&H has issued a draft notification proposing that the tyres of cars, buses & trucks shall meet the requirements of rolling resistance, wet grip & rolling sound emissions, as specified in Stage-II of the Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) 142:2019, amended from time to time,”

Do note that one can send in objections or suggestions to the ministry regarding the draft. These norms are similar to European norms that were implemented back in 2016.

We can expect the prices of tyres to increase marginally, though we’ll have to wait for the norms to kick in.
