Toyota Mirai FCEV launched in India

It seems that the Indian government is really serious about the nation’s environmental issues. So much so that the in-term Road Transport and Highways Minister, Mr Nitin Gadkari has joined hands with Japanese carmaker Toyota and launched India’s very first hydrogen fuel car, The Toyota Mirai FCEV.

The launch was conducted at the union ministers official residence. During the launch the union minister stated “FCEV is one of the best zero-emission solutions. The Toyota Mirai is an environment-friendly car with no tailpipe emissions except for the water. He further said that the green hydrogen can be produced using renewable energy and biomass“.

The road and transport minister also quoted that the introduction & adoption of technology to tap into the green hydrogen’s potential will play a key role in securing a clean and affordable energy future for India.

  • The new FCEV comes powered by a hydrogen fuel cell battery pack with a range of 640km on a single charge.
  • Under the U.S EPA cycle (Environmental Protection Agency) the 4-door version of the Mirai holds a range of 502km.

During the event a representative from Toyota also stated “it is also necessary to work in collaboration with various stakeholders including government, testing & research agencies, and industry associations. We have entered into an MoU with the Government automotive testing agency, iCAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology), to study and evaluate the world’s most advanced fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) Mirai which runs on hydrogen, on Indian roads and climatic conditions”.
