You must have seen some misleading headlines floating across the internet about the legalization of using a mobile phone while driving. In a recent meeting, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, has mentioned that MoRTH is considering making talking on phones while driving legal in India. This is only allowed if you are talking using the hands-free system and not holding your phone directly in your hands.
There are a few things you need to keep in mind:
- If you get caught by the traffic police while using a mobile phone, you’ll have to pay the challan as per the rules. This rule will only be applicable if you are using a hands-free device.
- Talking on a phone, even while using a hands-free device, should be avoided. You should ensure that you have all your attention on the road. If you are new to driving, you should definitely avoid talking on a phone as it can distract you easily.
So, should the government really make using a mobile phone legal?
Well, this clearly shows that the government wants to promote the use of technology to make driving safer in India. Along with this announcement, there have been a few other announcements such as making six airbags mandatory, introducing BNCAP, and so on.
